Autumn Term in Year 1

Read Write Inc

The children have been assessed and placed in groups.  Every day they will learn sounds, read, write and complete handwriting tasks.  Each group will work on different sounds and books depending on what level they are working at.

Inspire Maths

This term the children will be working on counting, reading and writing number 0-10.  They will compare numbers and use appropriate vocabulary e.g. more than, fewer, greater than and smaller than.  They will use two numbers to make 10, work on addition and subtraction within 10 and solve word problems.  We will look at 2D shapes, patterns and ordinal numbers.

We will be learning about our senses and using them to explore the local area and day to day objects.

We will be discussing autumn and the observing changes.

We will be using materials to make models so please feel free to send in any boxes or material suitable for junk modelling.  The children will learn about primary and secondary colours.  We will look at famous artists work and discuss what we think of them.

We will be using Google Earth, photographs and maps to learn about where we live.  We will find out about human and physical features of our local environment and hopefully spend lots of time out of the classroom.

Large apparatus will be every Friday afternoon.  The children will learn to move, balance and jump safely when using the equipment.  On Wednesday afternoons the children will be learning basic skills including moving in different ways, balancing, throwing and catching.

The children will use their voices to speak, sing and chant.  They will learn to clap, click and tap in short rhythmic patterns.  We will listen to different music and discuss how it makes us feel and what we like to listen to.

We will learn about Guy Fawkes and why some people celebrate bonfire night.   We will learn about Remembrance day and visit church for a service.

The children will share their thoughts on belonging and we will identify the different groups that they belong to including family, school and sports teams.  If you would like to talk to us about your faith or traditions we would love to have you in class.
